Speed Reading Tips For Slow Readers

speed reading tips pictureAre you a slow or fast reader? If you are slow in learning, then here are some tips on speed reading to increase your reading speed.

  • Look for answers to the questions you first raised;
  • Answer questions at the beginning or end of chapters or study guides;
  • Note all the underlined, italicized, bold printed words or phrases;
  • Read only one section at a time, and recite the summary of each section afterwards;
  • Reread captions under pictures, graphs, etc.;
  • Reduce your speed for difficult passages;
  • Stop and reread parts which are not clear; and
  • Study graphic aids.

Do you need more free speed reading tips?

  • Skim the material if you only want the shallowest knowledge of the particular subject. You can skim by reading only chapter headings, introductions and summaries.
  • Scan the text if you need a moderate level of information on a subject. Read the chapter introductions and summaries in detail, but may speed read the contents of the chapters. Highlight and understand key words and important concepts. Remember to look at the diagrams and graphs.
  • Study the text if you require an in-depth knowledge of a subject. Start off by skimming the material first to get an overview. Then read it in detail while seeing how the information presented connects to the overall structure of the subject. An effective method of getting the deepest level of understanding on a text is to use a formal method such as SQ3R.
  • Do you read every article of every magazine, or every chapter of every book? If so, you're probably wasting your time reading unimportant details. My advice is that you don't need to read all of what you DO read. You can choose what you want to read. Select the chapters and articles that are important. Ignore the rest.
  • When you begin reading, make sure you finish it. If you feel tired, then take a rest. The more you read the clearer the ideas.
  • When you finish reading, you need to review what you have read. Go back to the pages where you don't understand the ideas clearly. Read them again to get the ideas.
