What Are The Two Speed Reading Techniques That You Must Have

speed reading techniques imageThese techniques involve the relationship between the reading speed and comprehension. Studies show that there is a big relationship between the rate and the comprehension. Some people read rapidly and understand the subject matter but others read slowly and understand little of what they read. This lead to some assumptions that slow reading may affect comprehension.

Good comprehension relies on your ability to extract and retain the important ideas that you've read. Effective learning is not on how fast you can read. If you can do this fast, then your reading speed can be increased. If you try to read fast and worry about comprehension at the same time, then your reading speed will plunge. Your mind is occupied with your fears and you are not focusing on the ideas that you are reading.

But, if you concentrate on the purpose of reading (locating main ideas and finding answers to your questions), your speed and comprehension should increase. Your concern should be not with how fast you can get through a chapter alone, but with how quickly you can comprehend the facts and ideas that you need. This is one of the vital reading strategies that you should master.

Comprehension

You understand better during speed reading compared to normal reading. You will not rereading words and sentences because your mind is busy looking for meaning. The average reader spends about 1/6th of the time rereading words than actually reading them. Rereading interrupts the pace of comprehension and slows down the process. Therefore, you need to get rid of this poor habit.

How to comprehend easily? Check out these free speed reading techniques.

  1. Scan the chapter first.
  2. Identify the sections to which the author devotes the most amount of space where the text focuses. If there are lots of diagrams for a particular topic, then that must also be an important concept.
  3. If you're really under time pressure, you can skip the sections to which the least amount of space is devoted.
  4. Take note on headings and read the first sentence of every paragraph more carefully than the rest of the paragraph. The main idea is usually situated there.
  5. Read the important parts and the main ideas. Focus on nouns and main propositions in each sentence. Look for the noun-verb combinations, and focus the mind on these.
  6. Then, close the book and ask yourself what you now know about the subject that you didn't know before you started.

Reducing Skip Backs

Never go back and read the same phrases from the text.

Slow readers have a bad reading techniques. They tend to read and reread the same phrase over and over again. This technique of making "regressions" doubles or worse triples reading time and affect their performance in grasping what they need to know. It usually does not even help you to understand the subject better. It is true that a single careful, attentive speed reading may not be always enough for you to understand the subject matter entirely. However, it is often far better than continual regressions throughout your reading. You can improve your comprehension by focusing on the preview first before you begin the careful reading.

Let me give you a tip on how to decrease skip backs (the number of times that the eyes goes back to a previous word or sentence). Run a pointer along the line as you read a book. Use your finger, a pen or any pointed tool as a guide. Your eyes will follow the tip of your pointer, making the flow of speed reading smoother. How fast you read relies on how fast you move the guide. Therefore, if you want to increase your reading speed, then all you need is to move the guide faster.

If you can improve your comprehension and reduce on skip backs, then you have grasped these important speed reading techniques. It is no point to read fast if you can't understand the subject you are reading. Comprehension depends on whether you can visualize and retain the important points of the text.
